Mixpanel is good when fewer users but traking multiple events
Amplitude — when product is basic, but many users
Step 1. Metric Discovery
1.1. Define Business objectives
Define the goal: what questions you want to answer with the data?
Example: grow profitability
1.2. Define Tactics & strategies
Your plan for product and source of data
1.3. Define Metrics / KPIs for your type of business
Look for benchmarks, industry standards
