Bird-eye view

If you apply a timeline to your career it will look something like:

Viet Hoang

Detailed view

So this long cable can have 4 wires (at early stage i.e. MVP) as seen below in profile

Viet Hoang

You will earn few more wires as you move forward with the timeline.

Skills

Cable on the left is Foundational skills + Functional skills (on the right) = Minimum Loveable Product (MLP)

Product Sense skills:
Can go through the CIRCLE framework and iterate on task

Analytical knowledge of
Scale of the problem, size of the opportunity, priorities.
Defining the success metrics, using to direct product iterations

Execution
Collaborate with teams to unblock their problems, to ship!
Get stakeholders buy-in, align on product direction

As you can see Analytics and Execution is transferable skills. Product sense needs to have PM depth in it, as you well know everyone today is an “idea or solution man”, you need to show how you approach it as a pro.

But decisive factor here is your Functional skill. This is the answer to
- what you are good at?
- what earns you respect in your team
- gives you unlimited scope to polish that skill

Tools

These skills could be developed as a muscle. But to help you with the technique you will need a mentor (reach out to me for mentorship). Mentors can help with:
- drive you along the timeline (different mentors at different stage)
- help to hone on any of the “wire” you working on
- other reasons: network to connect to the right stakeholder
- feedback loop
